The Northland Road entrance to Aberfoyle House, now part of the University of Ulster Magee campus, are to get a spruce up just in time for UK City of Culture 2013.

THE University of Ulster is planning a major spruce up of the boundary of its Magee campus in Londonderry just in time for UK city of Culture 2013.

The University has applied for permission to repoint stone boundary walls including localised repairs and also to replace boundary railings and gates.

The area around the University of Ulster at Magee was designated a Conservation Area by the Department of the Environment (DoE) back in June 2006 yet some of the boundary wall - not least the gateway to Aberfoyle House on Northland Road - is in a poor state.

A Design Guide for the Magee Conservation Area produced two years ago acknowledged the special character of the Magee Conservation Area pointing to listed buildings at Magee itself, Old Foyle College, Claremont Presbyterian Church, Carrickmore House, Aberfoyle House, Duncreggan House in Foyle and Londonderry College, Old Tech (NWRC) and on Aberfoyle Terrace, Clarence Avenue, College Terrace and the Northland Road.

The fresh application requires Listed Building Consent and consultations have now been issued.
