Lisneal one of 21 schools in formal intervention

LISNEAL College is one of twenty-one schools named by the Education Minister John O’Dowd as having been involved in his Department’s formal intervention programme in this academic year.

Two years ago Lisneal was placed in formal intervention after the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) reported certain elements of the quality of education provided at the school were less than satisfactory.

Mr O’Dowd stated explained the 21 schools were “entered into the Formal Intervention Process (FIP).”

He stated: “The purpose of the FIP is to make sure that a school receives the support and guidance it needs to effect improvement and provide the pupils with the quality of education they are entitled to receive. There are currently twenty-one schools in formal intervention.”

After being placed in formal intervention in March 11, 2010, Lisneal was given two years to address the issues raised in the negative inspection report.

Last month the results of a follow-up inspection were published and showed the school had made considerable progress.

Another Londonderry school, Gaelscoil na Daróige was reported by the Education Minister as having exited the formal intervention process last March 2012
