Pupils from Londonderry, Limavady and Strabane recently came together at North West Regional College to celebrate their success as the latest recipients of a worldwide customer service qualification.

The WorldHost programme was first established over 20 years ago and has been used to prepare volunteers for major events like the London Olympics 2012, but here it is being used for the City of Culture.

Pupils from Belmont House Special School, Foyleview Special School joined with students from the Western Education and Library Board Tuition Service Alternative Education Programmes in Strabane, the LAEP programme in Limavady and Foyle KS4 AEP, to mark their success at the College.

The pupils undertook the Level 2 Customer Service and Ambassador course at the College, and this week were presented with their certificates by Sammy Gamble, Operations Manager for Skills Solutions at the Department for Employment and Learning, who provided the funding for the programme.

The pupils gained an insight into the principles of good customer service and welcoming tourists in the hospitality, tourism and leisure industries. The qualification is recognised throughout the world and is a valuable addition to any CV.

Presenting certificates to the students, Sammy Gamble said: “This programme has been invaluable in providing young people who may have barriers to employment, education or training to acquire customer service and hospitality skills. The level of interest and enthusiasm shown by the young people on the programme has been commendable and I congratulate them on their achievements.”

Staff from North West Regional College’s School for Hospitality, Tourism and Sport have delivered the WorldHost programme to young people and professionals from across the region over the past year, and it has been seen as an recognised standard for providing excellent customer service.
