FOLLOWING the discovery earlier this month of a neglected German Shepherd dog just outside Eglinton, staff at the Rainbow Rehoming Shelter have asked the Sentinel readers to ‘Please Help Polly’.

The alarm was raised on October 5 by a resident of Highmoor Road, who spotted the badly emaciated pure bred dog after she heard a car stop, door open and then close, with the car taking off at high speed.

According to the Centre Manager, Joanne Mullan, a volunteer from the Centre had difficulty locating the dog because of the remote location, but thankfully, Polly, as she has been named, is now receiving the care she so badly needs.

“She is an elderly German Shepherd, approximately 10 - 12 years old. She is severely emaciated. She was weighed at the vets as weighing only 19 kilos when an adult German Shepherd should weigh more than 30 kilos. Her waist is so tiny we could put our hand around it,” said Joanne.

Distraught at the condition in which Polly was discovered, Joanne appealed for help. “Despite the disgraceful neglect she has been the victim of she is very friendly and affectionate towards humans. She will recieve the vet treatment she requires and is recieving regular but very small feeds in order to allow her body to recover and gain weight. She is an elderly dog and we will make sure she recieves the care and love she deserves.

“When Polly has recovered we will be appealing for a special retirement home for her. The centre always gives priority to animals most in need of help like Polly but we rely on donations to allow us to continue to care for animals like Polly, so any donations to help with Polly’s recovery would be very much appreciated. Please phone 028 7181 2882 if you can help.”
