THE Dirty Dozen isn’t just a film classic, it is also the new name for12 of the City’s Postmen as they attempt to raise a four-figure sum for men’s cancer awareness and charity organisation, Movember UK.

A fortnight into their quest, the 12 now have modest eyebrows on their top lips and are determined to ‘grow together’ to raise between £1,500 and £2,000 with the help of friends, colleagues and family.

Among them is Dean McMonagle from the Waterside, who revealed that Prostate Cancer UK is the Royal Mail’s charity for the year, and for every Pound they raise their employers will match it. He is being joined in his quest by Tony Kelly, Brian McBride, Gavin McDaid, Damien McCann, Terry McKinney, Gavin Bradley, Gareth Jones, Don Henry, Tommy Stewart, Paul Kelly and Bill Bourne.

“My grandfather died of it in 2004 and my ambition was always to do something like this and this is too good an opportunity to pass up. I know several of the other guys have also been effected by the lost a male relative to prostate cancer.”

Asked how their wives or girlfriends were coping with the facial fuzz, Dean said while their partners were supportive of what they were trying to achieve, nevertheless, the ladies were generally less than amused by the tickly lips.

“Well, I know my wife Rachel is not impressed. She is already counting the days down to December 1 to when it comes off again.”

Whatever we raise the Royal Mail has promised to match our total Pound for Pound, so it is a great opportunity to raise money and awareness; you know what us men are like when it comes to visiting the doctor, said Dean.
