Get crafty this August

Arts and crafts enthusiasts from the city and beyond will have the opportunity to learn from the experts next month with a series of fascinating craft workshops taking place in the Craft Village.

Whether you’re looking for a new hobby, or just want to try out something new, the ‘You Make My Monday’ series of workshops, which runs throughout August, offers the chance to learn some relaxing new skills, from knitting and embroidery, to basic pottery and even the Japanese art of origami.

The workshops are being organised by Derry City Council in conjunction with Craft NI as part of August Craft month, and will take place at the thatched cottage in the village. In week one (August 6, 1pm to 4pm) knitwear designer Michelle McCarroll will be on hand to teach the knitting basics, from casting on to casting off, and providing tips on how to start a knitting project. The following week (August 13, 1pm to 4pm) Louise Kelly will be revealing the art of hand stitched embroidery, using interesting fabrics and threads to create your very own embroidered picture.

In week three (August 20) the class focuses on the art of origami, and some relaxing and simple techniques used to create the paper models, led by Naomi Fleury. In the final week (August 27) Deirdre O’Callaghan will be holding a fun taster session on the art of pottery.

Due to limited places in the first two weeks, anyone interested is asked to sign up in advance, while the final two classes will operate as drop-in sessions.
